About the Role
We are looking for a Research Scientist with proven track record of identifying and solving challenging science problems to join our Emerging Technologies team. The team works on cutting-edge optical sensor research involving innovative design, selection, and implementation of emerging optoelectronic components, as well as system integration, testing, and troubleshooting.
Qualifications
PhD in Photonics, Applied Physics, Optical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
1-2 years’ direct experience in optical system design, development, laboratory and field prototyping and implementation for remote sensing applications (including any post-doctoral research work).
Must demonstrate proficiency and knowledge in laser propagation theory, spectroscopy, atmospheric measurements, design, building, testing, analysis, and evaluation of optical systems.
Must be able to assemble, develop design of experiments, test, analyze and troubleshoot component/system performance.
Must be able to contribute and lead multiple programs simultaneously, achieving required results on time and on budget.
Must be able to prepare technical proposals and documentations.
Ability to present technical concepts and designs to Senior Management and customers.
Must have excellent technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
Must have at least US Citizenship or permanent residency.
Nice to Haves:
Experience with AI/ML algorithm development/implementation.
Project planning and execution.
Understanding/training on laser safety and tests standards
Meta materials and devices.
MWIR/LWIR imaging and sensing.

Responsibilities
Solve challenging science and engineering problems in the field of optics and photonics through critical thinking, developing new concepts, and application of new methods.
Develop system architectures, perform modeling and simulation, develop prototypes, conduct experiments, and demonstrate innovative technologies that are focused on optical sensor systems.
Apply experience in the use of modern programming, modeling, and simulation tools (e.g. COMSOL, ZEMAX, Matlab/Simulink, C/C++, Python, LabVIEW, OpenGL and OpenCV libraries, etc.) to help develop new technologies. Familiarity with any atmospheric laser propagation simulation software is a plus.
Work alongside with engineering and research teams in researching, selecting, evaluating, and/or developing component/system and packaging for specific applications.
Interact with government and non-government representatives to ensure the customer requirements are fully understood and addressed.
Lead/provide technical write-ups related to system, hardware, and software development on bids and proposals
Other duties as assigned by management.
