*A Proposal Most Earnest*
Beneath the arbor's verdant, leafy shade,
Where fragrant roses climb in sweet repose,
I take thy gentle hand, my dearest maid,
And speak the ardent love my heart yet knows.
Thy radiant eyes, like stars in heaven's sphere,
Outshine the fairest jewel's brilliant gleam.
No diamond could to me be half so dear
As thy pure soul, of which I daily dream.
On bended knee, I offer now my all -
My name, my home, my life forevermore.
Oh say thou wilt be mine, whate'er befall,
And walk beside me to eternity's shore.
With trembling voice, thou giv'st thy sweet assent;
Our hearts entwine in perfect, pure content.
