# Creating Energy from Waste Plastic
Waste plastic can be converted into energy through several processes:
1. **Pyrolysis**
- Heat plastic in absence of oxygen
- Produces oil, gas, and char
- Oil can be refined into fuel
- Gas can generate electricity
2. **Gasification**
- Heat plastic with controlled amount of oxygen
- Produces syngas (CO + H2)
- Syngas used to generate electricity
3. **Incineration**
- Burn plastic to produce heat
- Heat used to generate steam and electricity
4. **Plastic-to-fuel**
- Chemical process to convert plastic to diesel fuel
- Fuel can be used in vehicles or generators
Key benefits:
- Reduces plastic waste in landfills and oceans
- Produces energy from abundant waste material
- Can be more efficient than recycling for some plastics
Challenges:
- Emissions and pollutants must be carefully controlled
- Sorting and cleaning plastic waste adds costs
- Economic viability depends on oil prices
